Connective tissue graft (CTG) procedures offer superior root coverage and keratinized tissue height compared to enamel matrix derivative (EMD) treatments for gingival recession. Both methods provide long-term clinical success for treating exposed root surfaces.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To clinically evaluate the long-term efficacy of EMD combined with a coronally advanced flap.
  • To compare EMD treatment with the subpedicle connective tissue graft (CTG) procedure for gingival recession.
  • To assess root coverage and keratinized tissue gain over 24 months.

    • CTG also resulted in a significantly greater increase in keratinized tissue height (4.05 mm) compared to EMD (2.25 mm) at 24 months (P<0.001).
    • Both treatments demonstrated statistically significant improvements within and between groups for keratinized tissue height.

    Conclusions:

    • Both CTG and EMD treatments are clinically successful for gingival recession.
    • CTG procedures yielded superior root coverage and keratinized tissue gain.
    • EMD serves as a viable long-term alternative for root coverage and increasing keratinized tissue height.
