Summary

This study validated the Daily Activity Record (DAR) for measuring physical activity. Self-reported data using DAR strongly correlated with pedometer and recall questionnaire results, showing its potential for health programs.

Area of Science:

  • Physical activity measurement
  • Health behavior research
  • Biostatistics

Background:

  • Accurate assessment of physical activity is crucial for public health.
  • Self-report measures are common but require validation against objective or other reliable methods.
  • The Daily Activity Record (DAR) is a self-report tool for assessing physical activity levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the Daily Activity Record (DAR) against objective (pedometer) and concurrent (7-day recall) measures of physical activity.
  • To determine the reliability and accuracy of self-reported physical activity data.
  • To assess the utility of the DAR in community-based research and health programs.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive correlational study design was employed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Twenty-five working women participated in the study.
  • Physical activity was measured using the DAR, a 7-day physical activity recall questionnaire, and Yamax pedometers.
  • Main Results:

    • Metabolic equivalent unit (MET) scores derived from the DAR showed a strong positive correlation with pedometer data (Spearman's rho=0.607, p=0.003).
    • DAR-derived MET scores were also strongly associated with 7-day physical activity recall data (Spearman's rho=0.542, p=0.009).
    • Statistical significance was achieved for both correlations, indicating robust associations.

    Conclusions:

    • The Daily Activity Record (DAR) is a validated tool for measuring self-reported physical activity.
    • The DAR demonstrates significant correlation with both pedometer and physical activity recall data.
    • The DAR is a potentially valuable instrument for physical activity assessment in community health initiatives and research.
