Summary

This study identifies key risk factors for recurrent pregnancy loss. Advanced maternal age, prior miscarriage history, and smoking significantly increase the risk of first-trimester repeated miscarriage.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Epidemiology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology

Background:

  • Recurrent miscarriage lacks well-designed epidemiological studies on risk factors.
  • Understanding these factors is crucial for effective prevention and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate sociodemographic, anthropometric, obstetric history, and lifestyle factors associated with first-trimester repeated miscarriage.
  • To estimate the relative risk of repeated miscarriage using adjusted odds ratios.

Main Methods:

  • Population-based case-control study in Sweden.
  • In-person interviews for maternal characteristics.
  • Plasma cotinine and folate analysis.
  • Statistical analysis using adjusted odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Increased risk of repeated miscarriage in women aged >= 35 years (OR 2.9) and <= 24 years (OR 2.8).
  • More than fourfold increased risk for women with prior miscarriage history, prolonged time to conceive, or uterine myoma.
  • Smokers had an increased risk (OR 2.1).
  • Non-smoking women with high caffeine intake showed increased risk; no association in smokers.
  • Low plasma folate levels were not linked to increased risk.

Conclusions:

  • Maternal age, previous miscarriage, conception time, myoma history, and smoking are significant risk factors for repeated miscarriage.
  • High caffeine intake may pose a risk for non-smoking women.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the complex etiology of recurrent pregnancy loss.
