The intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) gene + 13848 A/G polymorphism is linked to myocardial infarction (MI) risk in Chinese individuals. Allele A may increase the risk of developing MI.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Cardiovascular Disease Research
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) plays a role in inflammatory processes relevant to cardiovascular health.
- Genetic variations in ICAM-1 may influence susceptibility to myocardial infarction (MI).
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between ICAM-1 gene polymorphisms (+ 12959G/A and + 13848A/G) and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI).
Main Methods:
- Genotyping of ICAM-1 polymorphisms using Polymerase Chain Reaction-Sequence Specific Primers (PCR-SSP) and PCR-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP).
- Analysis of 165 MI patients and 199 healthy controls.
- Measurement of plasma lipid and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels.
Main Results:
- The ICAM-1 + 12959G/A polymorphism was not detected in the study population.
- A statistically significant difference in genotype frequencies for the ICAM-1 + 13848A/G polymorphism was observed between MI patients and controls (P<0.05).
- The AA genotype of the + 13848A/G polymorphism was associated with a 1.651-fold increased risk of MI (OR = 1.651, 95% CI: 1.089-2.504).
Conclusions:
- The ICAM-1 + 12959G/A polymorphism is not present in the Chinese population studied.
- The ICAM-1 + 13848A/G polymorphism in exon 6 is associated with myocardial infarction in Chinese individuals.
- Allele A of the ICAM-1 + 13848A/G polymorphism may act as a risk factor for MI in this population.
