Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Oncology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Parotid gland tuberculosis is an uncommon manifestation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.
  • Clinical presentations of parotid tuberculosis can be varied and mimic other pathologies.
  • Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective management.

Observation:

  • This study details three distinct cases of parotid gland tuberculosis.
  • The cases presented with differing clinico-pathological appearances, challenging initial diagnosis.
  • Diagnostic methods included histopathological evaluation and fine needle aspiration cytology.

Findings:

  • Histopathology and fine needle aspiration cytology confirmed tuberculosis in all three cases.
  • The diverse presentations underscore the importance of considering tuberculosis in parotid swellings.

Related Experiment Videos

  • All patients achieved a positive clinical outcome.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights the diagnostic utility of histopathology and FNAC for parotid tuberculosis.
    • Emphasizes the need for a high index of suspicion for tuberculosis in parotid gland lesions.
    • Confirms the efficacy of standard four-drug antitubercular chemotherapy for parotid tuberculosis.
