Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Dermatology
  • Vascular Anomalies
  • Dermatopathology

Background:

  • Vascular nevi encompass a range of cutaneous anomalies stemming from abnormal angiogenesis and vasculogenesis.
  • These conditions present with diverse clinical manifestations in pediatric patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a descriptive study observing the varied types of vascular nevi in children.
  • To document the specific clinical features associated with pediatric vascular nevi.

Main Methods:

  • Screened 4256 pediatric dermatology outpatients for vascular nevi between August 2002 and August 2004.
  • Analyzed the clinical presentation, demographics, and lesion characteristics of identified cases.

Main Results:

  • Identified 19 pediatric cases (0.44%) with vascular nevi, predominantly infantile hemangiomas (17 cases) and two port-wine stains.
  • The majority of infantile hemangiomas were superficial (88.2%) and progressing (89.5%), with common sites including head/neck and multiple locations.
  • Observed complications such as ulceration (4 cases) and infection (1 case).

Conclusions:

  • Infantile hemangiomas (HOIs) represent the most common type of vascular nevus encountered in childhood.
  • Understanding the prevalence and features of HOIs is crucial for pediatric dermatological care.
