Ionic liquids, or low-temperature molten salts, are not non-volatile. Many ionic liquids can be distilled at low pressure without decomposition, opening new applications.
Area of Science:
- Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Ionic liquids are composed solely of ions and are widely perceived as non-volatile.
- This presumed involatility underpins many applications but limits purification and gas-phase uses.
Purpose of the Study:
- To challenge the notion that ionic liquids cannot be distilled.
- To demonstrate the distillability of common aprotic ionic liquids for improved purity and new applications.
Main Methods:
- Distillation of selected aprotic ionic liquids at low pressure.
- Analysis of recovered substance purity and decomposition.
Main Results:
- Demonstrated that many ionic liquids can be distilled at 200-300°C and low pressure without decomposition.
- Significant recovery of pure ionic liquid substance was achieved.
Conclusions:
- The assumption of ionic liquid involatility is unfounded.
- Distillation enables high-purity recovery and expands the potential applications of ionic liquids in various processes.
