Area of Science:

  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Naso-lacrimal obstruction affects patient quality of life.
  • Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical option for naso-lacrimal duct obstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report outcomes of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) procedures.
  • To describe surgical techniques and clinical experience in DCR.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 52 endoscopic DCR procedures performed between May 1999 and February 2003.
  • Pre-operative diagnosis included lacrimal pathway irrigation and dacryocystography, with CT scans in select cases.
  • All procedures performed under general anesthesia with silicone tube intubation for 3 months.

Main Results:

  • The study included 42 patients (32 female, 10 male) with a mean age of 57 years.
  • Mean surgical time for primary DCR was 30 minutes.
  • Success rates were 81% for primary DCR and 75% for revision DCR.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic DCR is a successful surgical intervention for naso-lacrimal obstruction.
  • The described techniques and outcomes support the efficacy of endoscopic DCR.
