Sunlight exposure can affect Mantoux test results. Using non-sun-exposed skin, like the inner thigh, may provide a more accurate reading for tuberculosis screening in children.

Background:

  • Sunlight exposure is known to cause immunosuppression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare Mantoux test responses on sun-exposed (volar forearm) versus non-sun-exposed (inner thigh) skin.
  • To investigate the effect of sunlight-induced immunosuppression on Mantoux test accuracy.
  • To identify optimal skin sites for Mantoux testing.

Main Methods:

  • Administered 0.1 mL of 5TU purified protein derivative Mantoux test to 45 children.
  • Recorded reactive induration at both volar forearm and inner thigh sites.
  • Compared average induration measurements between the two sites.

Main Results:

  • Five children showed reactive induration to the Mantoux test.
  • Average induration on the volar forearm was 8.2 mm.
  • Average induration on the inner thigh was significantly greater at 11.6 mm.

Conclusions:

  • Sunlight exposure may suppress the skin's reaction to the Mantoux test.
  • Non-sun-exposed skin sites, such as the inner thigh, may yield enhanced Mantoux test results.
  • Utilizing less sun-exposed areas could improve the accuracy of tuberculosis screening via Mantoux testing.
