Background:

  • Multiple primary lung cancers are increasingly diagnosed due to advances in detection and treatment.
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging treatment for various cancers, including central lung cancers.
  • PDT utilizes a photosensitizing agent and laser light for targeted cancer cell destruction.

Observation:

  • From 1980, 145 patients with central lung cancers were treated with PDT at Tokyo Medical College.
  • Thirty-five cases involved endoscopically evaluated early-stage lesions.
  • Thirteen patients had multiple primary bronchogenic carcinomas, with five synchronous and eight metachronous diagnoses.

Findings:

  • Three of 13 patients with multiple tumors had early-stage lesions treated solely with endoscopic PDT.
