Hemostatic response to postprandial lipemia before and after exercise training

Aerobic exercise training improved aerobic capacity and body composition in individuals with chronic hypertriglyceridemia. The training also reduced blood clotting potential and inflammation markers after a high-fat meal.

- Eight subjects underwent baseline testing (aerobic capacity, body composition, postprandial lipemia) and final testing after 6 months of aerobic exercise.
- Blood samples were analyzed for free fatty acids, triglycerides, insulin, glucose, factor VII activity, tissue factor pathway inhibitor-factor Xa complex, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and leukocyte tumor necrosis factor-alpha gene expression.
Main Results:
- Exercise training significantly increased aerobic capacity (P < 0.0001) and improved body composition (P = 0.04).
- While postprandial lipemia responses for FFA, TG, insulin, and glucose showed no significant differences, the mean triglyceride response and fat oxidation rate improved.
- Hemostatic variables (PAI-1, FVIIa, TFPI/Xa) and TNF-alpha gene expression were significantly improved post-training.
Conclusions:
- Aerobic exercise training is effective in improving cardiovascular risk factors associated with chronic hypertriglyceridemia.
- The training reduces coagulation potential, enhances fibrinolytic potential, and decreases inflammatory markers postprandially.
