Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Sexual Medicine
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Previous research indicated differences in social phobia (SP) prevalence between men with sexual disorders and controls.
  • A strong link between SP and male sexual disorders, specifically premature ejaculation (PE), was hypothesized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between premature ejaculation (PE) and social phobia (SP).
  • To compare the prevalence of SP in men with PE versus a control group without sexual disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-five men with PE (diagnosed via DSM-IV criteria) were compared to 93 control subjects without sexual disorders.
  • Social phobia diagnosis was determined using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview.
  • Statistical analysis included chi-squared tests and logistic regression.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 47% of men with PE were diagnosed with SP, compared to only 9% in the control group (P=.001).
  • Logistic analysis revealed a significant association between SP and PE (Odds Ratio=10.97, P=.0001).

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the first clear evidence of a strong relationship between social phobia and premature ejaculation.
  • The findings suggest that SP may be a risk factor for PE, with implications for early intervention in children.
  • Shared treatment strategies, such as selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may be beneficial for both conditions.
