Summary

Duck plague virus caused fatal disease in both gnotobiotic and conventional ducks within four days. Lesion development in duck plague did not require synergistic action of Salmonella and Pasteurella species.

  • To determine if synergistic action of Salmonella and Pasteurella species is essential for lesion development.

  • Oral inoculation of four-week-old gnotobiotic and conventional ducks with duck plague virus.
  • Clinical observation and post-mortem examination for gross and microscopic lesions.

  • All inoculated ducks, regardless of microbial status, succumbed to duck plague between days 3 and 4 post-inoculation.
  • Gross and microscopic pathological findings were comparable between gnotobiotic and conventional duck groups.

Conclusions:

  • The synergistic action of Salmonella and Pasteurella species is not essential for the development of duck plague lesions.
  • Duck plague virus alone is sufficient to cause characteristic disease and pathological changes in ducks.
