Summary

Frontal horn cysts (FHCs) in newborns are often benign and resolve spontaneously. This study found FHCs in 0.5% of healthy infants, with most resolving within months, suggesting a normal variant.

Background:

  • Frontal horn cysts (FHCs) are thin-walled cysts near the lateral ventricles.
  • Their clinical significance and natural history in neonates require further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and sonographic characteristics of FHCs in healthy term infants.
  • To evaluate the natural history and resolution patterns of FHCs.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of cranial ultrasound examinations in 3,545 term infants over 2 years and 5 months.
  • Documentation of FHC presence, laterality, and follow-up imaging for resolution.

Main Results:

  • FHCs were identified in 18 infants (0.5% incidence), mostly typical (17/18) and unilateral (11/18).
