Regular tai chi chuan exercise (TCC) significantly improved functional mobility and health beliefs in middle-aged adults. The 12-week program also enhanced regulatory T cell function, indicating positive immune system modulation.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Immunology
- Exercise Science
Background:
- Physical exercise intensity and duration impact health and immune responses.
- Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) is a mind-body exercise with potential health benefits.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate a 12-week Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) program's effects on functional mobility, health beliefs, and immune regulation.
- To assess changes in middle-aged adults participating in regular TCC exercise.
Main Methods:
- A quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-program assessments.
- 12 weeks of regular TCC exercise program.
- Involved 37 healthy middle-aged community volunteers (14 men, 23 women).
Main Results:
- Significant improvements in functional mobility (p=0.001) and exercise health beliefs (p=0.013).
- No significant changes in total white or red blood cell counts.
- Significant decrease in monocyte count (p<0.001), increased CD4:CD8 ratio (p=0.05), and elevated CD4CD25 regulatory T cells (p=0.015).
- Increased production of regulatory T cell mediators (TGF-β, IL-10) after viral antigen stimulation.
Conclusions:
- A 12-week Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) exercise program enhances functional mobility and personal health expectations.
- Regular TCC exercise positively modulates regulatory T cell function and associated mediator production.
