Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Gynecology

Background:

  • Endometriosis is a prevalent condition characterized by endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
  • Its exclusive localization to the ileum is exceptionally rare, posing diagnostic challenges.
  • Symptoms can lack specificity, complicating early and accurate diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A 50-year-old woman presented with chronic right lower quadrant pain.
  • Initial investigations suggested an ileal tumor.
  • The patient subsequently developed an acute small bowel obstruction.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection via laparotomy successfully removed the ileal lesions.
  • Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of ileal endometriosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient's symptoms resolved post-operatively.
  • Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of considering rare presentations of endometriosis.
    • It highlights the diagnostic difficulties in cases without typical catamenial exacerbation.
    • Early recognition and surgical intervention are crucial for managing ileal endometriosis and preventing complications like obstruction.
