Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Neurology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts are uncommon lesions within the spinal canal.
  • Enlargement of these cysts can lead to progressive neurological deficits due to spinal cord compression.

Observation:

  • A case of a 59-year-old woman with a 6-month history of progressive back pain and bilateral leg radiation is presented.
  • The review encompasses pathogenesis, symptomatology, diagnostic approaches, and treatment considerations for spinal extradural arachnoid cysts.

Findings:

  • The study highlights key aspects of spinal extradural arachnoid cysts, including their etiology and clinical presentation.
  • Diagnosis and management strategies are discussed, emphasizing the importance of considering this rare entity.

Implications:

  • Surgical intervention offers a curative outcome for spinal extradural arachnoid cysts.
  • This condition warrants inclusion in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with spinal extradural lesions and compressive symptoms.
