The auto-motive model suggests situational cues automatically activate goals. However, research indicates semantic priming may not effectively activate goals, challenging this core assumption of automatic goal activation.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Social Psychology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- The auto-motive model posits that situational cues can automatically activate behavioral goals, influencing actions without conscious awareness.
- Semantic priming is frequently employed to study automatic goal activation, assuming primes related to goal-associated situations can trigger goal pursuit.
Purpose of the Study:
- To critically test the assumption that semantic primes related to situational features can activate behavioral goals.
- To investigate the efficacy of semantic priming in eliciting goal-related responses, including emotional, intentional, and perceptual changes.
Main Methods:
- Four experimental studies were conducted to assess the impact of semantic primes on goal activation.
- Measurements included emotional responses, subjective goal importance, behavioral intentions, and perception of goal-related stimuli.
Main Results:
- The results did not support the assumption that semantic primes related to situational cues can activate behavioral goals.
- Evidence for automatic goal activation via semantic priming, as predicted by the auto-motive model, was not found across the assessed measures.
Conclusions:
- The findings question the utility of semantic priming procedures for testing hypotheses derived from the auto-motive model.
- Limitations of semantic priming in reliably inducing automatic goal activation warrant further investigation and methodological refinement.
