This study reveals that while most surgeons and nurses attend breast multi-disciplinary meetings (MDMs), oncologist attendance is variable, and not all cancer patients are discussed pre-surgery, indicating a need for improved MDM structure and guidelines.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate surgeons' perspectives on breast multi-disciplinary meetings (MDMs).
  • To assess current surgeon engagement and commitment within MDMs.
  • To identify areas for improvement in breast MDM practices.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire survey was distributed to 250 members of the British Association of Surgical Oncology.
  • 153 questionnaires were returned, with 136 suitable for analysis.
  • Data analysis focused on attendance rates, meeting structure, and participant feedback.

Main Results:

  • High attendance (over 95%) reported for surgeons and breast care nurses.
  • Variable attendance for clinical oncologists (70%) and medical oncologists (44.1%).
  • Only 28% of MDMs occurred during protected sessions, and not all cancer patients were discussed pre-surgery.

  • Breast MDMs require improved structure, protected time, and consistent oncologist attendance.
  • Development of guidelines for breast MDMs is necessary to ensure optimal patient care.
