Summary

A rare case of normal thyroid tissue found as a cardiac mass in a patient with pulmonary embolism is described. Surgical removal was successful, with no recurrence detected via iodine-123 scanning.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a significant cardiovascular event.
  • Cardiac masses can have diverse etiologies, requiring thorough investigation.

Observation:

  • A 62-year-old woman with a history of PE presented with a right ventricular cardiac mass.
  • Histological examination revealed the mass to be normal thyroid tissue.

Findings:

  • The patient was clinically and biochemically euthyroid, despite the presence of ectopic thyroid tissue.
  • Post-excision, an iodine-123 whole-body uptake and scan showed no evidence of residual ectopic thyroid tissue.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the rare occurrence of cardiac goiter (ectopic thyroid tissue in the heart).

Related Experiment Videos

  • It underscores the importance of comprehensive histopathological analysis for cardiac masses.
  • Successful surgical management and follow-up imaging confirm the absence of recurrence.
