Framing Effects03:26

Framing Effects

Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in different ways based on the...
Routes of Persuasion02:20

Routes of Persuasion

Persuasion is the process of changing our attitude toward something based on some kind of communication. Much of the persuasion we experience comes from outside forces. How do people convince others to change their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors? What communications do you receive that attempt to persuade you to change your attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors?
Persuasion Strategies01:52

Persuasion Strategies

Researchers have tested many persuasion strategies, including the foot-in-the door and the door-in-the-face techniques, in a variety of contexts. Ultimately, the principles are effective in selling products and changing people’s attitude, ideas, and behaviors (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).

These actions are particularly important in managing social impressions when one's behavior might be seen as inappropriate, incompetent, or morally questionable.Types of Aligning ActionsThe three principal types of aligning actions are disclaimers, accounts, and apologies.DisclaimersDisclaimers are preventive; they are...

Impression Management Techniques IV: Altercasting

Altercasting is a strategic communication technique in which an individual imposes a specific identity or social role onto another person to influence their behavior and shape the interaction. By presuming a role—such as “responsible leader” or “patient person”—altercasting encourages the target to conform to that identity, often aligning their behavior with the expectations associated with the role. The power of this tactic lies in its subtlety; once a role is assigned, it becomes socially...

Methods of Medium Optimization

Optimizing growth media enhances microbial proliferation and maximizes product yield. Statistical experimental design methodologies provide structured and reproducible approaches, offering progressively higher levels of robustness and efficiency. The One-Factor-at-a-Time (OFAT) MethodThe One-Factor-at-a-Time (OFAT) method involves adjusting a single variable while keeping all others constant. However, it cannot detect interactions between variables, often leading to suboptimal outcomes when...

Area of Science:

  • Health Communication
  • Media Studies
  • Social Marketing

Background:

  • Soap operas have a proven track record in driving prosocial change internationally.
  • There is growing interest in the US for utilizing soap operas in strategic health communication.
  • Formative research is crucial to assess the effectiveness and guide the implementation of soap operas for health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To profile the demographic characteristics of soap opera users.
  • To explore the potential of soap operas in health promotion within the United States.
  • To provide strategic guidelines for using soap operas in health messaging.

Main Methods:

  • Constructed a user profile based on demographic data (age, education, income).
  • Applied selective processing theory to understand message retention and behavioral influence.
  • Developed strategic media planning and message construction recommendations.

Main Results:

  • Soap opera users tend to be younger, less educated, and have lower incomes compared to nonusers.
  • Individuals with a health orientation are more likely to recall and act upon health information presented in soap operas.
  • The study identifies key segments within the audience for targeted health messaging.

Conclusions:

  • Soap operas represent a viable medium for health communication in the US, particularly for specific demographic segments.
  • Selective processing theory explains how health-oriented viewers can be influenced by soap opera content.
  • Strategic planning and message design are essential for maximizing the impact of soap operas on health behaviors.
