Area of Science:

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Standard Lyot filters are crucial for spectral filtering but can be complex.
  • Optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) offers unique light manipulation properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel spectral filter design.
  • To achieve wavelength tunability without an intermediate polarizer.
  • To match the spectral transmission of a standard Lyot two-stage filter.

Main Methods:

  • The filter design is based on optical rotatory dispersion (ORD).
  • Key components include three dispersive polarization rotators and two quarter-wave retarders.
  • Test measurements were conducted to validate performance.

Main Results:

  • A functional spectral filter was developed.
  • The filter demonstrates wavelength tunability.
  • Spectral transmission equivalent to a standard Lyot two-stage filter was achieved.
  • The absence of an intermediate polarizer was confirmed.

Conclusions:

  • The developed spectral filter offers a simplified design compared to traditional Lyot filters.
  • The use of ORD provides an effective method for creating tunable spectral filters.
  • This technology has potential applications in various optical systems requiring precise spectral control.
