Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients often report dissatisfaction with the information provided by healthcare professionals.
  • Identifying specific patient information needs is crucial for effective disease management and improving patient-provider communication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a questionnaire to assess information needs in COPD patients.
  • To identify key areas where COPD patients require more information for self-management.

Main Methods:

  • A postal questionnaire was developed with input from ten patient focus groups (59 patients).
  • The questionnaire was distributed to 304 COPD patients, achieving a 63% response rate.
  • Reliability and validity of the questionnaire domains were assessed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Significant patient knowledge gaps were identified, including disease naming (21%), medication adherence (3%), and emergency symptom recognition (8% worsening breathing, 36% ambulance use).
  • 55% of patients exercised inappropriately, highlighting a need for self-management education.
  • The Lung Information Needs Questionnaire domains showed significant discrimination based on healthcare professional contact and demonstrated good test-retest reliability (total score .89).

Conclusions:

  • Patients can effectively contribute to developing tools that assess their information needs.
  • COPD information needs are diverse, with a notable emphasis on non-pharmacological self-management strategies.
  • The validated questionnaire serves as a practical tool to guide clinical discussions and tailor information delivery to individual patient requirements.
