Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Endocrinology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects 18.2 million Americans, incurring substantial healthcare costs.
  • Chronic hyperglycemia in DM leads to multi-organ damage, particularly the genitourinary system.
  • Genitourinary complications are highly prevalent in diabetic individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To emphasize the need for early recognition of diabetic urologic complications.
  • To promote a comprehensive understanding of how DM affects the genitourinary tract.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review and synthesis of existing data on DM and genitourinary complications.
  • Analysis of prevalence rates for various diabetic urologic conditions.

Main Results:

  • 80% of DM patients experience lower urinary tract complications.
  • 50% of DM patients develop nephropathy.
  • 35-75% of DM patients suffer from sexual dysfunction.

Conclusions:

  • Diabetic urologic complications are common and severe.
  • Enhanced understanding and early detection are imperative for managing DM's genitourinary impact.
