This study presents a modified electronic portal imaging device (EPID) algorithm for accurate 2D dose reconstruction in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). The validated EPID dosimetry method offers a reliable alternative to film for pretreatment IMRT verification.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Imaging Science

Background:

  • Electronic Portal Imaging Devices (EPIDs) are crucial for verifying radiation therapy doses.
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) requires precise dosimetric verification.
  • Existing EPID algorithms needed modification for advanced IMRT techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To modify and validate an EPID back-projection algorithm for IMRT dose reconstruction.
  • To assess the accuracy of the modified algorithm using amorphous silicon EPIDs.
  • To evaluate EPID dosimetry as a replacement for film-based verification in IMRT.

Main Methods:

  • Modified a previously developed EPID back-projection algorithm for IMRT.
  • Utilized an amorphous silicon EPID and ionization chamber measurements for model parametrization.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Reconstructed 2D dose distributions and compared them with film measurements using the y-evaluation method.
  • Main Results:

    • The modified algorithm accurately described lateral scatter within the EPID.
    • Back-projected 2D dose distributions showed high accuracy compared to reference data.
    • Excellent agreement was achieved between EPID and film measurements for prostate cancer IMRT plans.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified EPID algorithm accurately predicts dose distributions in homogeneous phantoms.
    • EPID dosimetry is a reliable and potentially fast tool for pretreatment IMRT verification.
    • EPID measurements can replace traditional film measurements for IMRT field verification.
