Area of Science:

  • Perinatal medicine
  • Obstetrics
  • Fetal monitoring

Background:

  • True umbilical cord knots are infrequent occurrences during pregnancy.
  • These knots have been linked to potential intrapartum fetal distress and adverse perinatal outcomes.

Observation:

  • A case report details a pregnancy with intrauterine growth restriction and oligohydramnios.
  • Labor was marked by a non-reassuring fetal heart rate tracing.
  • Four umbilical cord knots were identified post-delivery, with an uncomplicated neonatal course.

Findings:

  • No current reliable ultrasound or Doppler methods exist for detecting umbilical cord knots.
  • Umbilical cord knots can potentially lead to fetal compromise during labor and delivery.

Implications:

  • Highlights the diagnostic limitations in identifying umbilical cord knots prenatally.
  • Underscores the importance of recognizing potential risks associated with umbilical cord abnormalities during labor.
  • Suggests further research into improved diagnostic modalities for umbilical cord anomalies.
