Computed Tomography01:10

Computed Tomography

Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

This study developed a novel palatogram technique using artificial palates and alginate powder to map tongue contact areas during speech. The method reliably identified consistent tongue-palate contact zones for speech sound production.

Area of Science:

  • Linguistics
  • Speech Science
  • Biomedical Engineering

Context:

  • Investigating articulatory phonetics requires precise methods to visualize tongue-palate interactions.
  • Traditional palatography methods can be invasive or lack detailed spatial resolution.

Purpose:

  • To develop and validate an objective, quantitative method for mapping tongue-palate contact areas using artificial palates.
  • To establish a standardized procedure for generating and analyzing palatograms for speech sound research.

Summary:

  • Artificial palates coated with alginate powder were used to record tongue contact during speech sound articulation.
  • Photographic palatograms were captured, processed using image analysis, and standardized to a dental arch form.
  • Contact areas common to a majority of subjects were extracted, providing reliable articulatory data.

Impact:

  • Provides a reproducible technique for studying articulatory phonetics and speech production.
  • Offers insights into the precise lingual gestures involved in producing different speech sounds.
  • Potential applications in speech therapy, phonetics research, and the development of speech synthesis technologies.
