Summary

Visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients do not worsen in winter. This study found no seasonal variation in hallucination severity, suggesting chronobiology interventions are not a priority for PD hallucinations.

Background:

  • Visual hallucinations are a common and distressing non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • The potential influence of seasonal changes and chronobiology on hallucination severity in PD remains largely unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the chronobiology of visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients.
  • To determine if hallucination severity in PD patients is exacerbated during winter months compared to summer months.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal data on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) Thought Disorder (TD) score were analyzed in hallucinating PD patients over a 1-year cycle.
  • Analysis focused on patients with stable medication regimens to minimize confounding factors.
