Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Nephrology
  • Hyperbaric Medicine

Background:

  • Bilateral vision loss during hemodialysis is a rare but severe complication.
  • Ischemia is a common underlying mechanism for vision loss in these patients.

Observation:

  • A case report details a patient experiencing bilateral sight loss during hemodialysis.
  • The patient received prompt hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Findings:

  • Following hyperbaric treatment, the patient's visual acuity returned to their baseline levels.
  • This suggests a potential therapeutic benefit of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Implications:

  • Hyperbaric treatment should be considered for patients experiencing bilateral blindness during hemodialysis.
