Most Brazilian nephrologists lack training in interventional nephrology (IN) procedures like kidney biopsies and dialysis access. A large majority expressed interest in IN training to improve chronic kidney disease patient care.

Background:

  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patient care involves numerous diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • These procedures are often performed by non-nephrologists, leading to fragmented care.
  • Interventional nephrology (IN) is emerging as a new paradigm to centralize CKD-related procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current involvement of Brazilian nephrologists in specific IN procedures.
  • To identify the training needs and interest in interventional nephrology among Brazilian nephrologists.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire survey was distributed to 2500 nephrologists across Brazil.
  • The survey collected data on performance of renal biopsy, ultrasonography, peritoneal dialysis access, and hemodialysis vascular access.

    • Only 18% of respondents perform image-guided renal biopsies, with 42% performing them without imaging support.

    • A significant 87% expressed a desire for IN training.

    Conclusions:

    • The majority of Brazilian nephrologists are not adequately trained in essential interventional nephrology procedures.
    • There is a strong demand for IN training programs in Brazil.
    • Developing IN training centers is crucial for nephrologists to enhance CKD patient care.
