  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Child Psychiatry

Context:

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is prevalent in children with mental retardation (MR), affecting 4-15% of this population.
  • Understanding the epidemiological characteristics and diagnostic protocols for ADHD in children with MR is crucial.
  • Updating pharmacological treatment strategies for ADHD in children with MR is necessary.

Purpose:

  • To examine the epidemiological characteristics of neurodevelopmental disorders in patients with MR.
  • To evaluate diagnostic protocols for ADHD in children with MR.
  • To update the pharmacological treatment of ADHD in children with MR.

Summary:

  • ADHD is more frequent in children with mental retardation (MR) than in the general population.
  • Diagnostic methods for ADHD in MR patients are similar to those used for non-MR children.
  • Stimulant medications are the primary treatment for attentional and behavioral problems in children with MR.

Impact:

  • Provides insights into the prevalence and diagnosis of ADHD in children with MR.
  • Highlights the effectiveness of stimulant treatment for ADHD in this population.
  • Informs clinical practice regarding the management of ADHD in children with intellectual disabilities.
