Summary

Auditory steady-state responses offer an objective alternative to traditional hearing tests. This study found them accurate for predicting hearing loss in adults, especially those with sensory-neural impairments.

Background:

  • Auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) are proposed as an objective method for frequency-specific audiometry.
  • Traditional pure-tone audiometry (PTA) can be challenging for non-collaborative patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare hearing thresholds obtained via PTA and ASSR in adults with normal hearing and hearing loss.
  • To evaluate the applicability of ASSR in non-collaborative hearing-impaired subjects.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven adults (6 normal hearing, 5 hearing impaired) underwent both PTA and multiple frequency ASSR.
  • Simultaneous carrier tones (0.5-4 KHz) modulated in amplitude were presented monaurally at variable intensities.

  • The overall mean threshold difference between PTA and ASSR was 28 dB (SD=14.2), with a correlation of 0.71 (P=0.0012).
  • For hearing-impaired individuals, the mean difference was significantly smaller at 11.7 dB (SD=2.9).

  • Multiple frequency ASSR accurately predicts behavioral audiograms in patients with sensory-neural hearing impairments.
  • ASSR serves as a valid supportive tool for audiological evaluations, particularly for challenging patient groups.
