Summary

Small, nonencapsulated Cryptococcus neoformans cells can cause experimental cryptococcosis. These airborne yeasts may be inhaled, inhibiting phagocytosis and challenging the traditional view of encapsulated cells as the primary cause of infection.

Background:

  • Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungus known to cause cryptococcosis.
  • Traditionally, encapsulated yeast cells are considered the primary etiological agents of naturally acquired cryptococcosis.
