Bronchogenic cysts in the left ventricle are rare. This report details a successful surgical excision of a left ventricular bronchogenic cyst using a left anterolateral thoracotomy without cardiopulmonary bypass.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Congenital Abnormalities

Background:

  • Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies typically found in the mediastinum.
  • Intracardiac bronchogenic cysts, particularly within the left ventricle, are exceedingly rare occurrences.

Observation:

  • A rare case of a bronchogenic cyst located in the inferior wall of the left ventricle, between the epicardium and myocardium near the apex, is presented.
  • The cyst's proximity to vital cardiac structures posed a surgical challenge.

Findings:

  • Complete surgical excision of the left ventricular bronchogenic cyst was successfully achieved.
  • The procedure was performed via a left anterolateral thoracotomy, avoiding the need for extracorporeal circulation.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the feasibility of surgical management for rare intracardiac bronchogenic cysts.
  • Successful resection without cardiopulmonary bypass demonstrates a potentially less invasive surgical approach for selected cases.
