Summary

Radiation exposure from prostate brachytherapy is minimal for patient relatives. Patients treated with Iodine-125 or Palladium-103 implants pose very low risks, staying well below dose limits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze radiation exposure data from patients treated with Iodine-125 or Palladium-103 prostate brachytherapy.
  • To evaluate the associated risks for family members and the public.

  • Radiation exposure measurements were taken using an ionization chamber survey meter on 216 prostate cancer patients post-implantation.
  • Measurements were performed one day after permanent seed implantation of Iodine-125 or Palladium-103.

  • Dose rates correlated well with implanted activity and seed proximity to the skin.

Conclusions:

  • Dose rates for prostate brachytherapy patients are very low, with absorbed doses for relatives well below regulatory limits.
  • Advising patients to maintain a 1m distance for a period related to the radionuclide's half-life is recommended to adhere to ALARA principles.
