Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Spinal extradural angiolipomas are rare, benign tumors.
  • They predominantly occur in the thoracic region.

Observation:

  • Two patients, a 50-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, presented with lumbar spinal angiolipomas.
  • Symptoms included low back pain without neurological deficits.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging revealed extradural tumors at L4-L5 and L1-L2 levels.

Findings:

  • Both patients underwent successful surgical resection of the lumbar epidural angiolipomas.
  • Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of angiolipoma.
  • Postoperative recovery was complete, with symptom resolution.

Implications:

  • This case series highlights the possibility of lumbar angiolipomas presenting solely with low back pain.
  • Complete surgical excision is an effective treatment.
  • Long-term follow-up confirmed no tumor recurrence, suggesting a favorable prognosis.
