A new multichannel vector sum phase shifter uses distinct optical wavelengths for each channel, enabling precise control for phased array antennas. This technology achieves a phase shift range over 100 degrees for frequencies up to 7 GHz.
Area of Science:
- Optoelectronics
- Antenna Technology
- Signal Processing
Background:
- Phased array antennas require precise control over signal phase for beam steering.
- Existing phase shifting technologies may face limitations in multichannel integration and control.
Purpose of the Study:
- To demonstrate a novel multichannel vector sum phase shifter for phased array antenna applications.
- To enable selective and independent control of multiple phase shifting channels.
Main Methods:
- Implementation of each channel using a distinct optical wavelength.
- Utilizing an acousto-optic polarization coupler for selective control of each channel.
- Demonstration of the concept with two individually controlled channels.
Main Results:
- Successful demonstration of a multichannel vector sum phase shifter.
- Achieved continuously variable linear phase shift from DC to 7 GHz for each channel.
- Exceeded 100 degrees of phasing range per channel.
Conclusions:
- The novel multichannel vector sum phase shifter is suitable for phased array antenna applications.
- The use of distinct optical wavelengths and acousto-optic control provides effective channel management.
- The demonstrated performance validates the potential for advanced antenna systems.
