Summary

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of major causes of visual impairment and blindness in a suburban population in Puerto Rico.
  • To compare the prevalence of key eye diseases in Puerto Ricans with findings from other Hispanic populations, such as the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES).

Main Methods:

  • A population-based study was conducted in the San Juan metropolitan area of Puerto Rico.
  • A chart review was performed on 9,298 participants aged 40-79 years.
  • Diagnoses of cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), and diabetic retinopathy were evaluated using descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of cataracts was 22.1% and glaucoma was 42.6%.

  • Significant differences in eye disease prevalence suggest potential genetic, environmental, or lifestyle factors that warrant further investigation in Puerto Rico.
