Summary

A mobile mass in the left ventricle, identified as a papillary fibroelastoma, was surgically removed from a woman presenting with chest pain. This case highlights an unusual presentation of this cardiac tumor.

Background:

Papillary fibroelastomas are rare, typically benign cardiac tumors.
They most commonly arise on heart valves but can occur elsewhere in the heart.
Left ventricular tumors are uncommon, and papillary fibroelastoma in this location is particularly rare.

Observation:

A 38-year-old woman presented with chest pain, an atypical symptom for cardiac tumors.
Echocardiography revealed a mobile mass attached to the posterior papillary muscle of the mitral valve within the left ventricle.
The mass did not involve the mitral valve leaflets.

Findings:

Surgical resection of the left ventricular mass was performed.
Histopathological examination confirmed the tumor to be a papillary fibroelastoma.

Implications:

This case expands the known spectrum of clinical presentations for papillary fibroelastoma.
It underscores the importance of comprehensive cardiac imaging in evaluating unexplained chest pain.
