Landfill settlement, caused by waste decomposition, impacts site redevelopment. This study measured soil/solid waste movement and water behavior in a Kuwait landfill, revealing continued decomposition and significant movement under preloading.
Area of Science:
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Environmental Science
- Waste Management
Background:
- Landfill settlement due to organic solid waste decomposition poses challenges for site rehabilitation and reuse.
- The Al-Qurain landfill in Kuwait, closed for 15 years, is being considered for redevelopment, necessitating an understanding of its current state.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate soil/solid waste movement and water behavior within the Al-Qurain landfill.
- To assess the impact of preloading on landfill settlement and gas production.
Main Methods:
- Field experiments conducted over 6 months at the Al-Qurain landfill.
- Utilized settlement plates, Casagrande-type and pneumatic piezometers, and magnetic probe extensometers.
- Monitored soil/solid waste movement and subsurface water behavior.
Main Results:
- Biological decomposition of refuse continues post-closure, enhanced by subsurface water rise.
- Significant refuse fill material movement (up to 80% in the first month) occurred under preloading.
- Pneumatic piezometers indicated increased water head due to escaping landfill gases during preloading.
Conclusions:
- Continued decomposition and gas production are active processes in the closed landfill.
- Preloading significantly accelerates landfill settlement, with most movement occurring early in the process.
- Understanding these dynamics is crucial for the successful redevelopment of the Al-Qurain landfill site.
