Summary

Patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) maintain normal vitamin D3 production and metabolism. This study found no significant differences in vitamin D levels or UVB response between PSS patients and healthy controls.

Background:

  • Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is a connective tissue disease primarily affecting the skin.
  • Skin atrophy in PSS may impact epidermal functions, including vitamin D synthesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate epidermal function in vitamin D3 synthesis and metabolism in patients with PSS.
  • To compare vitamin D levels and ultraviolet B (UVB) response in PSS patients versus healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Measured vitamin D3 photosynthetic response to UVB irradiation in 8 PSS patients and controls.
  • Determined serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2-D] in 19 PSS patients and controls.
