Summary

Pesticide levels in Lake Biwa lagoons remained below safety limits. Shorter water residence times and higher chlorophyll-a levels accelerated herbicide breakdown, reducing contamination.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Ecotoxicology
  • Limnology

Background:

  • Paddy-use herbicides can contaminate aquatic ecosystems.
  • Understanding herbicide fate in lagoons is crucial for water quality management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess contamination levels of paddy-use herbicides in four lagoons around Lake Biwa.
  • To investigate the factors influencing herbicide concentration changes, specifically hydraulic residence time (HRT) and chlorophyll-a concentrations.

Main Methods:

  • Weekly water sampling at lagoon outlets from May to June.
  • Analysis of twelve monitored herbicides.
  • Calculation of herbicide concentration half-lives.
  • Correlation analysis with lagoon characteristics (HRT, chlorophyll-a).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Twelve herbicides were detected, but maximum concentrations were below Japanese water-supply guidelines.
  • Herbicide concentrations exhibited shorter half-lives in lagoons with shorter HRT, indicating effective dilution.
  • Lagoons with higher chlorophyll-a concentrations showed shorter half-lives, suggesting enhanced biological degradation.

Conclusions:

  • Hydraulic residence time and chlorophyll-a concentration are key factors in reducing herbicide contamination in lagoons.
  • Influent water replacement and biological degradation contribute significantly to herbicide removal.
