Area of Science:

  • Nonlinear dynamics
  • Complex systems
  • Phase synchronization

Background:

  • Coupled phase coherent oscillators can exhibit various synchronization patterns.
  • Periodic phase synchronization (PPS) was recently proposed as a pre-chaotic state.

Discussion:

  • This study critically re-examines the numerical evidence presented for PPS.
  • Theoretical arguments are developed to challenge the generic existence of PPS.
  • Flaws in previous numerical calculations are identified.

Key Insights:

  • The existence of periodic phase synchronization (PPS) in coupled phase coherent oscillators is questioned.
  • Previous claims of PPS are shown to be based on potentially flawed numerical simulations.
  • Generic conditions for PPS in these systems are unlikely.
