We calculated the exact Casimir force for a plate-cylinder geometry. The force shows a surprisingly weak decay at large distances due to magnetic modes, differing from parallel plate and sphere cases.
Area of Science:
- Condensed matter physics
- Quantum field theory
Background:
- The Casimir effect describes a physical force acting between two uncharged conductive bodies in a vacuum.
- Exact solutions for the Casimir force are known for parallel plates and spheres at large separations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the exact Casimir force for a plate-cylinder geometry.
- To investigate the force's behavior at large separations and understand the underlying physical mechanisms.
Main Methods:
- Utilizing path integral quantization.
- Employing a partial wave expansion for mode analysis.
Main Results:
- Derived the exact Casimir force for the plate-cylinder configuration.
- Identified an unexpectedly weak force decay, approximately L/[H^3 ln(H/R)], at large separations (H) due to transverse magnetic modes.
- Observed qualitative differences in the density of states for electric and magnetic modes.
Conclusions:
- The plate-cylinder Casimir force exhibits unique behavior compared to parallel plates and spheres.
- Transverse magnetic modes significantly influence the force's distance dependence.
- The methods used also provide insights into finite temperature corrections.
