Substance use & misuse·2024

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Musicology

Background:

  • Adolescent substance use and aggression are significant public health concerns.
  • The role of media, including music, in shaping youth behavior is an area of ongoing research.
  • Previous studies have explored links between media consumption and aggressive or risky behaviors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between music listening habits and substance use (alcohol, illicit drugs) and aggressive behaviors in young people.
  • To investigate specific music genres associated with these behaviors.
  • To control for demographic and psychological factors that might influence the observed associations.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 1056 community-college students (ages 15-25) completed self-administered questionnaires.
  • Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze associations between music genre preference and substance use/aggression.
  • Control variables included age, gender, race/ethnicity, and sensation seeking.

Main Results:

  • Listening to rap music showed significant positive associations with alcohol use, problematic alcohol use, illicit-drug use, and aggressive behaviors.
  • Techno and reggae music genres were also positively associated with alcohol and illicit-drug use.
  • Control variables like sensation seeking, age, gender, and race/ethnicity were significantly related to substance use and aggressive behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • Frequent exposure to music with substance use and violence themes may be linked to young people's engagement in these behaviors.
  • Music preferences might reflect underlying personal predispositions or lifestyle choices.
  • The observed relationships could also be influenced by common third factors independent of music preference.
