Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant bone tumor.
  • Hand chondrosarcomas present unique diagnostic and treatment challenges.
  • Ollier's disease can predispose individuals to chondrosarcoma development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a series of hand chondrosarcoma cases.
  • To analyze diagnostic methods and treatment outcomes.
  • To evaluate the long-term efficacy of surgical interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series analysis.
  • Clinical and radiological diagnostic criteria utilized.
  • Surgical interventions including ray amputation and curettage with bone grafting.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Five cases of hand chondrosarcoma were identified over 20 years.
  • Two cases originated from Ollier's disease.
  • Histological confirmation was challenging in 2 instances.
  • Surgical treatment resulted in no recurrence at a mean follow-up of 4.5 years.

Conclusions:

  • Hand chondrosarcoma is rare, often requiring combined clinical and radiological diagnosis.
  • Surgical management, including amputation and curettage with bone grafting, is effective in preventing recurrence.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate surgical intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes.
