Chronic kidney disease (CKD) significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular death in both men and women. However, CKD was not found to be a risk factor for all-cause mortality in this population-based study.

- In men, CKD showed significant associations with incident MI (HR 1.51; 95% CI 1.09-2.10) and CVD mortality (HR 1.48; 95% CI 1.15-1.92) after adjusting for CVD risk factors.
- No significant association was found between CKD and all-cause mortality in either men or women.
Conclusions:
- CKD is strongly linked to a higher risk of myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death in the general population.
- These associations persist independently of common cardiovascular risk factors in both genders.
- CKD poses a significant cardiovascular risk that warrants clinical attention in primary care settings.
