Cognitive deficits in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) emerge early. Over one-third of recently diagnosed ALS patients showed declining cognitive function within six months, indicating disease progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cognitive changes in recently diagnosed sporadic ALS patients over a six-month period.

  • A longitudinal study with 19 ALS subjects and 8 caregivers.
  • Neuropsychological assessments were conducted at baseline and six months.
  • Between-group and within-group analyses were performed.

Main Results:

  • Group comparisons showed no significant cognitive changes over six months.
  • Individual analyses revealed that 36.84% of ALS subjects developed abnormal cognitive performance.
