Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Review of the Snodgrass technique for distal hypospadias repair.
  • Focus on lessons learned to improve surgical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate the efficacy of the Snodgrass technique for distal hypospadias.
  • Identify factors influencing patient outcomes and complications.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients undergoing Snodgrass hypospadias repair over four years.
  • Data collection via chart review and parental telephone interviews.
  • Assessment of voiding function, cosmetic results, and complication rates.

Main Results:

  • Study included 33 patients (children and adults) aged 7 months to 39 years.
  • 94% achieved a straight urinary stream; 97% reported satisfactory cosmetic outcomes.
  • Complications included urethral fistula (3.3%) and meatal stenosis (21%), with the latter requiring anesthesia.

Conclusions:

  • The Snodgrass urethroplasty demonstrates satisfactory functional and cosmetic results for distal hypospadias.
  • Technique modifications, including meatoplasty and parental meatal dilatation, reduced meatal stenosis rates.
