Summary

Lapra-Ty clips used in laparoscopic partial nephrectomy can migrate into the collecting system, causing renal colic. Patients may pass these clips spontaneously after conservative management for post-operative pain.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Nephrology

Background:

  • Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is a standard procedure for renal tumors.
  • Absorbable suture clips, such as Lapra-Ty, are utilized for hemostasis and tissue approximation.
  • Minimizing complications and ensuring patient safety are paramount in minimally invasive surgery.

Observation:

  • A case report details a complication following laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.
  • Lapra-Ty absorbable suture clips were used for vessel ligation and parenchymal closure.
  • The patient presented with renal colic six weeks post-surgery.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography revealed opacities within the ureter, consistent with migrated clips.
  • The patient spontaneously passed several Lapra-Ty clips after conservative management.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Suture clip migration into the collecting system is a potential, albeit rare, complication.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of careful surgical technique and clip placement.
    • Further investigation into the long-term behavior and potential migration of absorbable clips may be warranted.
    • Awareness of this complication is crucial for urologists performing nephrectomies.
